Two of My Favorite Makers: Knit & Crochet

Updated: Nov 7, 2022

Let me tell you a little about two of my favorite makers.

One is a crocheter and one is a knitter. One has a dog in New York City, the other has three cats in Minnesota. One loves Halloween all year round, the other loves Halloween only for fall. One is blonde, the other has fire engine red hair. Despite how different they sound, they're both YouTubers, fiber art designers, and pretty awesome individuals.

It's Alt Knots and Knitty Natty!

If you haven't heard of them before, I hope you'll check them out after this. You won't be disappointed!

. . .

. . .

Alt Knots

Oh my goodness, I love Kayla and their Crochet Yarn Dungeon! They love all things spooky all year round, which I have to say is pretty awesome because their creative space is filled with things they love and inspire them to create.

They have a yarn coffin (now a hook coffin) that they change monthly with a new theme. It's been Killer Klowns, Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, and Slime Green Summerween Obsession. They use their beautiful Furls hook collection as part of their decor, which has in turn inspired me decorate my office with my notions.

My Cake Crochet Hook Holder

Alt Knots reignited my love for crochet when I found them back in May on YouTube. I don't remember what they were making at the time, but I remember them sharing a cake crochet hook holder, and I was like, "I gotta make one of those!" So I did.

They made crochet fun again, and I am super thankful for it. Their community is welcoming of all, which is great. If you love crochet and being unapologetically yourself, you'll fit right into the Ghoul Squad.

Kayla also got me back into reading with their monthly Haunted Book Club. They list a few horror-themed books to choose from every month that the squad then votes on. You can choose to read your own book, too, as long as you're reading! They like to put on an audio book while they crochet, which I think is a great idea. I've yet to try it though, but maybe soon!

Alt Knots also designs their own crochet patterns, which are available to purchase if you're a member of Ribblr! (not sponsored or affiliated) They have tons of cardigan and hat patterns, and they just released one for crochet socks. I may or may not be doing those soon.

Knitty Natty

Natalie, otherwise known as Knitty Natty on YouTube, is another lovely maker that focuses on knitting. I found her when I was clicking through yarn stash clear-out videos one night; the first video I saw of hers was "Simplifying My Yarn Room" and I stuck around after that.

I enjoy her videos pace, her aesthetic, and her mindset around knitting. She's been on a mission this year to completely use up her yarn stash, which has been an interesting journey to follow every month. It's even had me looking at my own stash in a different way, which I appreciate.

She posts yarn-related vlogs and weekly podcasts to YouTube with updates on her knitting projects. She's been working on a couple sweaters this month, and her work is so pretty! I really like the socks she's made, too, and I hope to join in on Sock Week next summer if I can join her quarterly Love In Stitches membership in time for it. I joined this quarter, and I'm looking forward to having a crafty community to talk to this holiday season.

Yarn Cozy Lite in Progress

I've been working on a yarn cozy pattern she released on Ravelry, too: Yarn Cozy Lite. She even has a crochet version!

This yarn cozy is my "on the go" knitting project, so it goes with me to doctors appointments or go somewhere with a decent amount of wait time. Having a portable project is something else I picked up from Natalie. It's nice, actually. I had to frog it once due to adding one too many increase rows, but I'm back to the ribbing now!

I hope you'll check out these two wonderful makers, Alt Knots and KnittyNatty this week and show them some love. I appreciate how they are totally different with their preferences not only in whether they knit or crochet, but how their creativity is best fed. Natalie prefers to streamline her supplies and keep herself super organized and minimal, while Kayla enjoys going all out with decorations and surrounding themself with whatever brings them joy. It's fun to see how each work and get inspired.

Who are some makers that you follow? I'd love to know!
