Gift Ideas for Knitters & Crocheters Pt. 1

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

If you start to get stressed about your holiday shopping around this time, I know the feeling. It's easy to panic and not know where to begin, but if you have some knitters and crocheters in your life that need gifts, allow me to help. I've compiled a three-part list of ideas specifically for them!

As a knitter and crocheter myself, my lists include items you may not think to gift, because we are more than yarn, hooks, and knitting needles! I've also given examples that range in price to fit your intended budget. Don't limit this gift list to just the holidays, though; you can use it to find something special for any occasion you need.

Come take a scroll and get those gift ideas flowing!

GIFT IDEAS FOR KNITTERS & CROCHETERS

Part One

(Part Two and Three will become clickable here when available)

Project Prep

Yarn Swift and Winder: a winder helps with neatening yarn stashes by turning yarn skeins, balls and hanks into center-pull cakes. Yarn Swifts help get hanks of yarn wound up to use.

$ Knit Picks Yarn Ball Winder ($20): plastic yarn ball winder that clamps to the edge of a table. Makes 100g or 3.5oz cakes.

$$ Knit Picks Yarn Swift ($50): this umbrella swift is made of wood and attaches to the edge of a table with a clamp. Available in light birch wood and dark mango wood.

$$ Yarn Ball Winder and Swift Basic Combo Set ($56): From Amazon. Winds 4oz yarn cakes. The umbrella swift is a metal and plastic construction, and the winder is plastic as well. Both winder and swift clamp to a table edge.

$$ Knit Picks Basic Winding Station ($84): includes the winder, swift, and a pretty wooden yarn bowl! The mango wood one looks like a cauldron. Available in light birch wood or dark mango wood.

$$$ Knit Picks Premium Winding Station Tool Kit ($100): yarn bowl, winder, swift, AND scale! Only available in light birch wood.

$$$$ Fiber Artist Supply Jumbo Yarn Ball Winder ($175): **needs two to three weeks for delivery!** Handmade of solid Maple, this winder is made to be the last winder they'll ever need. It's also available in an electric version for those with limited mobility. They have attachments, too, like yardage counters, foot pedals for electric models, and replacement parts.

$$$$ Standing Yarn Swift by The Oregon Woodworker ($227): If your handcrafter is tight on table space, consider a standing swift. This one comes equipped with a yardage counter to measure yarns as they wind. It adjusts for various hank sizes with wooden pegs. They also offer floor models. I believe this style is known as the Amish Swift.

. . . . .

Scales: useful tool when a project calls for a certain amount of yarn in grams and they're not sure if what they have will be enough. Also helpful when dividing larger skeins and wanting evenly-weighed cakes.

$ Ozeri Digital Scale ($10): From Amazon. Comes in a lot of color options, so you can get your crafter their favorite color. I like the teal, white, and green options.

$ Etekcity Scale ($14): From Amazon. Five color options, sleek design.

$ Knit Picks Weigh 'n Digital Scale ($18): simple silver scale. It's the same one that you'd get in the premium station set.

ADJUSTABLE YARN COZIES BY NECESSARYKNITS

Yarn Cozies: tame the skeins and cakes! These stretchy sleeves go over center-pull yarn skeins and cakes to keep them neatly contained and protected within a project bag.

Yarn Cozy Skein Saver from HeronHugs on Etsy ($5.20): super cute strawberry fabric!

PreciousKnits on Etsy ($9): Multiple styles available!

Adjustable Yarn Cozies by NecessaryKnits on Etsy ($12): tame even the smallest cakes with adjustable yarn cozies. They offer 13 different fabrics to choose from. They also have stretchy yarn sleeves in their shop!

$-$$ Sketchbooks and/or Notebooks: good for keeping all their ideas and plans in one place. You can find these on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Michael's, Wal-Mart, etc.

$-$$$ Gift card to favorite craft store/yarn shop

Tools of the Trade

I know I said we are more than our hooks and needles, but that doesn't mean they're still not a great gift! Your knit/crochet friend may have a preferred brand of hook or needle they use. Ask them if they do, if they need any sizes, or if there are any brands they have been wanting to try.

CLOVER CROCHET AMOUR 10-HOOK SET

$$ Clover Crochet Amour 10-Hook Set ($41): These are a more affordable set of crochet hooks that have hand health in mind. They have rubber handles to make it easier to grip the hooks, especially the smaller sizes. It comes with sizes B to J (2.25mm-6mm), and you can buy even smaller ones here if the crocheter you're gifting likes doing lacework or miniatures.

$$ Clover Crochet Amour 7-Hook Set ($54): these are the hook sizes that would complete the set above. They are not made with metal like the smaller hooks are; they are made of plastic. Comes with sizes K to P/Q (7mm-15mm).

$$ Susan Bates Interchangeable Crochet Hook Set ($44): yes, even crochet hooks have become interchangeable! Made for larger hands and for easier gripping if someone has limited mobility. Has hook sizes F to K (3.75mm-6.5mm).

$-$$$ Furls Crochet Hooks ($17-$149): these are great ergonomic crochet hooks. They come in multiple styles and bases, from resin to wood to metal. Some hooks are limited edition like in their Alpha series, making them pretty expensive. The other collections have a more reasonable price tag. The wood hooks are the lightest, followed by resin, and lastly metal as the heaviest hook type.

. . . . .

Interchangeable Circular Needle Kits: a great gift if your knitting friend has a crazy collection of circular knitting needles and is looking to streamline. The sets come with an array of needle sizes and cable lengths that change out with a twist of a tool. Some cable lengths are not included and must be bought as a non-interchangeable circular needle.

$$ Lantern Moon Heritage ($99): has 5 sets of 4" needles, US 3(3.25mm) and US 5 to US 8 (3.75-5mm). Cable lengths are 16" and 20", one swivel and one fixed in each length.

**Lantern Moon offers other sets with different needle sizes and cable lengths**

$$$ Knitter's Pride Self Love ($123): Pretty pastel rainbow set! US 4 (3.5mm), US 6 to US 11 (4mm- 8mm), cable lengths 24", two 32", and one 40".

$$$ Knitter's Pride Day & Night ($125): eight pairs of needles, US 4 (3.5mm), and US 6 to US 11 (4mm-8mm). Cable lengths of 24", 32", and 40" with swivel.

$$$ Lykke Cypra 5" Needle Set ($150): These are really pretty copper needles that won't stain projects but will patina over time if you let them. Can keep them polished, too. 5 cables: two 24" swivels, two 32" swivels, and one 40" swivel. Needle sizes from US 3 to US 15 (3.25mm-10mm).

$$$ Knitting Needle Book Kit by Sewrella Yarn ($180): Pretty matte gold color! Comes with cable sizes 14", 32", and 40". Needles are 5" long and come in sizes US 4(3.5mm) to US 11(8mm).
