Finished Object Reveal: Dessert-Themed Crochet Hook Holders

I feel like crocheted items need a moment to shine on my blog, don't you?

I've been posting a lot of Finished Object Reveals for knitted things lately, but rarely crochet. I think it's time it gets its just deserts... with crocheted desserts!

. . .

I created two different dessert-themed crochet hook holders over the past couple of months: one a cake and the other a cupcake. Would it surprise you to know I was inspired by Alt Knots for these? Probably not; I watch their YouTube videos all the time. I even briefly mentioned the cake holder back in October within my post, "Two of My Favorite Makers."

It deserves more of a moment, though. Same with the cupcake from November.

The Cake

The Pattern

The cake crochet hook holder (that's a mouthful!) was designed on the fly. The only time I followed a tutorial was when I was making the chocolate "icing" details. For that, I watched Girlybunches' YouTube video called, "Crochet Wave Fan Edging." I love the result that stitching gave my cake; it looks like piped frosting! The little cherries are from a pom-pom trim I'd bought a while ago. I simply cut them free of the ribbon and glued them in place.

It didn't look right to me to have the cake on its own, so I crocheted a plate after and sewed it to the bottom. I felt the plate then needed some stiffness after that, so I applied a couple layers of matte Mod Podge to it and called it complete.

. . .

The Yarns

Both cake and cupcake were constructed of worsted weight yarn from my stash.

I had two small, odd-ball skeins of a discontinued, unidentifiable yarn with a crimped, almost bouclé texture to it. That texture had thrown me off for years until I thought of it as cake batter. Then, it became the perfect yarn for these projects. I used it for both as a vanilla cake "flavor." The frosting on the cake was leftover Vanna's Choice in "Chocolate," and the cupcake's was an unknown white.

The cake's plate was also made with the unknown white yarn and a small bit of blue from a mini skein bag. I slip-stitched the blue yarn's round to add a bit of interest.

For the cupcake liner, I used a bigger, multi-colored skein I disassembled into smaller balls by color. I unfortunately don't know its brand or name, either. It gave me a few balls of a lovely turquoise, though, which is the color I used here.

The cupcake's candle was made from a 10-yard fingering weight sample I received with an order from Miss Bab's Yarn. It was the perfect amount for one candle; I had very little left over, and it matches my Furls Polaris crochet hooks! It's one of my favorite colors.

The Pattern

For the cupcake hook holder, I followed Elisa's Crochet free pattern, "Fall Cupcake." I edited it to form a hole in the center of the cupcake body as well as the icing topper, then omitted making the pumpkin. Other than that, the pattern's all hers.

I really like how Elisa's Crochet designed the liner for this pattern. The liner is removable, so you can easily make different kinds of cupcake "flavors" and liners for any occasion you'd like to display your crochet hook with. I'm tempted to make a red- and green-striped liner for Christmas.

I also made a quick I-cord candle with a cut bamboo skewer inside of it to put in place of a hook when it's not in use. I have not made one for the cake yet!

Final Thoughts

These were really fun to make from stash, especially the cupcake.

I don't have any wall shelves yet, but once I do, these holders are going on them. Also, don't be too shocked if I suddenly have a shelf full of crocheted goodies next year; these are almost as addicting as real cupcakes.
