Do you get cold feet? Not for any big commitments, but for late fall and all of winter?
Perhaps it's time to protect your toes with a nice pair of handmade socks. With Sockmas 2022 starting in less than two weeks, I've had sock patterns on my mind. I already picked my pattern and yarns for the make-along, but that doesn't stop me from exploring and sharing the knit and crochet socks I'm inspired by with you! Many are paid patterns, but I found a few that are free to download, too. They also vary in difficulty and colorwork need, so there's something for everyone.
Now-- onward to the patterns!

Knitting Patterns
Stranded Colorwork
Ovis Socks by thepetitknitter (paid pattern): Miss-matched socks and colorwork sheep?! Take my money!
...
Winter Night by Karen Rikimaru (paid pattern): These make me think of coming home in the evening and crunching my way across the driveway toward the warm glow of the open garage. Imagine knitting with a gradient yarn for the body and ankle of the sock to make a magical skyline, like this person did?
...
Jaana's Christmas Socks by Jaana Talvities (paid pattern): I love the pair on the left. Those are quintessential Christmas to me. I can see someone wearing them all Christmas Day or saving them for Christmas Movie Nights.
...
Festive Bauble Socks by Beatrice Olsson (paid pattern): Turn on your Christmas playlist and dance around the room in these ornament-adored socks. These would be perfect to make to wear while decorating your tree and house for the holidays. I really like the pine needle detailing that comes off of the toe and cuff.
Striped Patterns
Color Palette Socks by Laura Moorats (free!): I saw these being worked on by moonglowyarnco on Instagram in their pastel yarn set. I like the ribbed stripes between the stockinette ones. It adds a nice texture and visual interest.
...
Winter Solace Socks by Dana Rae Makes (paid pattern): These socks have nice stitch interest within the striped design, too. It's not overwhelming, and I think it brings out the colors more. I found a new yarn shop called Freckled Whimsy thanks to a fellow Love In Stitches member. They offer self-striping yarns galore! I could see myself making this pattern with their colorway "Grandma's Sugar Cookies." I highly recommend browsing their yarns if you're a fan of self-striping, hand-dyed yarns!
Solid Color Patterns
Sunday Socks by PetiteKnit (paid pattern): These look so cozy to me. I enjoy the color choice of the designer, and I really like how they did the ribbing stitch all the way up from the toe to the cast-off edge.
...
I'm So Basic Socks by Summer Lee Design Co. (free!): Okay, so these aren't completely solid, but I'm going to count them as such. You could probably continue on with your main color if you didn't want contrasting heels, toes, or cuffs on yours. I think it would make a good practice pattern for learning those techniques, though.
...
My Socks by MillaMia Sweden (paid pattern): Another lovely pair of textured socks. I can definitely see these keeping feet warm while skating or sledding. The pattern does call for the Kitchener stitch to close the toes, so look out for that!
...
Flip-Flop Winter Socks by Wendy Prager Goeckner (free!): These would make a good gag gift for those who love to wear their sandals with socks all the time. It may not even need to be a gag at all! Make them for someone who would appreciate the effort of handmade socks and the loving poke at their fashion choices.
Crochet Patterns
Cozy Christmas Morning Slippers by Rohn Strong Designs (paid pattern): Christmas Morning or any winter morning? I can just imagine how soft and warm these are with the faux fur yarn. You could make these in brown faux fur and add little claws to the front for bear feet. The good news is that the bottom is made out of regular worsted weight yarn, so slipping won't be too much of a worry when wearing these.
...
Vetur Socks by Angela Plunkett (paid pattern): Imagine these done up in some cool-toned variegated yarns for winter! Make some for yourself, or make many for holiday gifts. You can customize each pair with your recipient's favorite colors! These are toe-up construction with alternating single- and double-crochet stitching.
...
Comfort Slippers by Sarah Read (free!): Want something extra pretty to tiptoe down the stairs with on Christmas morning? Crochet up a pair of these and get creative with the decorations on them. Who says it has to be a flower? Why not adorn them with holly leaves or your another kind of three-dimensional design. You may even be able to cross-stitch on them with how small the stitching is.
...
Winter Crochet Slipper Socks by Briana K Designs (paid pattern): These look like good slippers to tuck your feet into and drift off to sleep. I greatly enjoy the subtle color shift in these. They're meant to look like a knitted pair but done up in crochet! Sneaky, sneaky.
Phew, that list was more extensive than I realized!
I hope you found some good ideas from it, be it for yourself or for holiday gifting. I'm looking forward to starting my first pair soon. Maybe after them I'll tackle another pattern from this post! I gotta say: the Ovis Socks are calling my name...
Happy Knitting and Hooking, Friends!
