The Birth of a Name: The Story Behind "Eleventh Month Design"

My shop's name was born out of a feeling.

It's that thoughtful, electric and mysterious energy only November has for me. I love the frantic, swirling moments that pull and release with the distant hum from the end of a year, like the rhythm of a winded soul.

I can't help but wander further into myself in November as well. The cold weather beckons me to sit somewhere quiet and warm, then start drifting into the caves and pools inside myself that shape who I am... to me, November brings insight to my life and the year I just had.

. . . . . .

My mother and I are also November Babies. She introduced me to crafts as a child, too. I used to watch her sew my sibling's and my Halloween costumes; she made me several Princess Jasmine outfits to wear since I loved them so much (there's a birthday picture to prove it somewhere).

She taught me to sew after that.

She also taught me how to crochet. Well...tried to. Since I am a lefty, I had to sit opposite her so I could mirror her actions. I was easily flustered and gave up, but at 17, I came back to the craft and learned on my own.

My business logo features a Chrysanthemum. It's not only the flower of the month, but I remember my mother reading me the story of the little mouse named Chrysanthemum. The way she chirped, "Chrysanthemum! Chrysanthemum!" when the mother mouse called to her daughter has stayed with me through the years; my mother's voice sweetly repeated that one word, chrysanthemum, like she was saying it to me as a kiss on the cheek.

Chrysanthemum.

This sweetness and mystery mix for me in a way that is only felt when November comes. Any other time is from a sleepy, content state of having time to spare before the end of the year. I hope Eleventh Month Design will bring about that unique sense of calm along with a spark of intrigue to look deeper within to find those sweet, exotic places in your soul that feel like a day in November.
